Dr. Ruben P. Diaz was a longtime leader of Children’s Lung Specialists and the Cystic Fibrosis Center, remembered for his medical expertise, compassion and dedication to children and families in Southern Nevada.
A life devoted to children’s health
After moving to Las Vegas in 1991, Dr. Diaz established Children’s Lung Specialists and served as Director of Pediatric Pulmonary Services and the Cystic Fibrosis Center at University Medical Center. During his 14 years as a Las Vegas pediatrician, he helped develop the Lied Pulmonary Clinic and became deeply involved in caring for children with complex respiratory conditions.
A board-certified pediatric pulmonologist, Dr. Diaz participated in clinical research and drug trials that sought better treatments for children with cystic fibrosis, asthma, exercise-induced bronchospasm and other pulmonary disorders. He was recognized for his service to the Southern Nevada community, including being named Physician of the Year in Pediatrics.
Those who knew Dr. Diaz remember something even more important than his accomplishments: the way he treated people. He gave every child the same dignity and attention, regardless of a family’s financial circumstances or language barriers. He remained optimistic in difficult situations and was a tireless advocate for the children entrusted to his care.
Dr. Diaz passed away in December 2004 at the age of 51. His dedication remains an important part of the history and mission of Children’s Lung Specialists.
